A Day in the Life of a Dentist

In cegep, my program is Science and my field of study is biology. I study living organisms. I am learning about the way the human body works and I find it very interesting. Also, I love to work with my hands. Therefore, my dream is to be a dentist because I can mix both of these interests.

A dentist is a qualified person that can treat any condition that affects the mouth of their patient. A good dentist needs to be meticulous, they must have a good medical knowledge and they need to know how to interact with people. Teeth and gums are what  dentists work on.  They have adapted their practice to the community standards of what healthy gums and teeth are. For example, they whiten teeth more and more frequently. Dentists need to be qualified to do dental surgery to be able to operate on anything concerning the bone structure of the mouth or any complicated oral procedure. The rest of the work is taken care of by the assistants. They do the X-Rays and they clean patients mouths. A big part of the job is teaching to patients how to take good care of their mouth. Good dentists know how to interact with patients effectively. Some diseases and their complicated treatments could be avoided if  patients took care of their dental health. Dentists are here to detect the first signs of a disease and help patients avoid an intricate treatment. To be able to do this successfully, dentist need to see their patients regularly. Unfortunately, it is not happening because many patients can’t afford to see their dentist on the regular because of the health insurance they have. A normal work day for a dentist lasts between 7 and 10 hours. Of course, it could be more if there is an urgent situation concerning a patient. The fact that dentists can have a regular schedule is an advantage that explains why students are attracted to this profession.  A lot of dentist agree that being able to take breaks and spend quality time with your loved ones justify the long hours they must work. If they chose another path like being a doctor, they would have a way more packed schedule than a dentist. There are many expenses that a dentist needs to cover. For example, they need to pay for dental assistants, for good products, for apparatus and for insurance concerning their legal responsibility. To be able to afford these expenses, dentist try to have effective days, which means that they attempt to treat as many patients as possible.

In conclusion, I can affirm that this is the job that suits me the best. I really hope that I will be accepted into this program.
