Science Glossary

Hi, my name is Yasmin. In cegep, my program is Science and my field of study is biology. This glossary will be helpful to students in that field because it contains vocabulary that will be used in their biology classes. These classes are very complex and you have to learn a lot of terms. This glossary explains clearly these terms.

ADP
A nucleotide made up of adenine, ribose, and two phosphate units.
aerobic
Relating to or denoting exercise that improves or is intended to improve the efficiency of the body's cardiovascular system in absorbing and transporting oxygen.
anabolism
The synthesis of complex molecules in living organisms from simpler ones together with the storage of energy.
anaerobic
Referring to an organism, environment, or cellular process that lacks oxygen and may be poisoned by it.
anticodon
A specialized base triplet on one end of a tRNA molecule that recognizes a particular complementary codon on an mRNA molecule.
calmodulin
An intracellular protein to which calcium binds in its function as a second messenger in hormone action.
chromatid
Each of the two threadlike strands into which a chromosome divides longitudinally during cell division.
cytoplasm
The material or protoplasm within a living cell, excluding the nucleus.
diurnal
Applied to organisms that are active during the daylight hours.
ecosystem
A biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment.
ecotype
A locally adapted variant of a species, differing genetically from other ecotypes of the same species.
evolution
The process by which different kinds of living organisms are thought to have developed and diversified from earlier forms during the history of the earth.
genotype
The genetic constitution of an individual organism.
gland
An organ in the human or animal body that secretes particular chemical substances for use in the body or for discharge into the surroundings.
gradualism
A view of Earth's history that attributes profound change to the cumulative product of slow but continuous processes.
homeostasis
The tendency toward a relatively stable equilibrium between interdependent elements, especially as maintained by physiological processes.
lacteal
A tiny lymph vessel extending into the core of an intestinal villus and serving as the destination for absorbed chylomicrons.
leukocyte
A colorless cell that circulates in the blood and body fluids and is involved in counteracting foreign substances and disease.
moleculeAdd more terms
A group of atoms bonded together, representing the smallest fundamental unit of a chemical compound that can take part in a chemical reaction.
nucleoid
A dense region of DNA in a prokaryotic cell.
oocyte
a cell in an ovary that may undergo meiotic division to form an ovum.
operon
A unit made up of linked genes that is thought to regulate other genes responsible for protein synthesis.
organism
An individual animal, plant, or single-celled life form.
osmoregulation
The maintenance of constant osmotic pressure in the fluids of an organism by the control of water and salt concentrations.
osmosis
A process by which molecules of a solvent tend to pass through a semipermeable membrane from a less concentrated solution into a more concentrated one.
phenotype
The set of observable characteristics of an individual resulting from the interaction of its genotype with the environment.
phospholipids
A lipid containing a phosphate group in its molecule.
plasma
The liquid matrix of blood in which the cells are suspended.
reticulum
A fine network or netlike structure.
ribose
a sugar of the pentose class that occurs widely in nature as a constituent of nucleosides and several vitamins and enzymes.
taxonomy
The branch of science concerned with classification, especially of organisms.
terminator
A special sequence of nucleotides in DNA that marks the end of a gene.
totipotency
The ability of embryonic cells to retain the potential to form all parts of the animal.
urea
A colorless crystalline compound that is the main nitrogenous breakdown product of protein metabolism in mammals and is excreted in urine.
vacuole
A space or vesicle within the cytoplasm of a cell, enclosed by a membrane and typically containing fluid.
vascular
Consisting of a vessel or vessels, especially those that carry blood.
venule
A very small vein, especially one collecting blood from the capillaries.
wobble
A violation of the base-pairing rules in that third nucleotide (5' end) of a tRNA anticodon can form hydrogen bonds with more than one kind of base in the third position (3' end) of a codon.
zygote
A diploid cell resulting from the fusion of two haploid gametes.

Introduction Post

Hi, my name is Yasmin Bouzaza. I am a student and my program is Science. I want to become a dentist. I liked my last english class, we read a comic named "V for Vendetta" and I really enjoyed it. In my free time, I like to read and spend time with my family and friends. In this class, I would like to work on my oral skills.
